St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School (Alcona School) - 1993
Owner: Simcoe County Roman Catholic Separate School Board
Contractor: Jordan Construction Management Inc. / Bandiera and Associates Inc.
Original Budget: $ 3.5 m
Tender: $ 3.34 m
Final Cost: $ 3.46 m
Authorized Extras: $ 124,877.
Area: 3946.0 M2 42,471.0 sq. ft.
Cost: $ 78.64/sq. ft.
Project Profile: St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School is a new regional Catholic school which will serve south Simcoe children in the Township (now Town) of Innisfil. The building consists of 17 classrooms, including Special Education and Resource Withdrawal facilities. Support facilities include full gymnasium and stage, administrative and teachers rooms, guidance, health and full library and resource areas.
A 240.0 sq.m Day Care Facility for pre-schoolers and schoolers was incorporated into the project in conformance with the Day Nurseries Act, (Ont. Reg. 760/83 and Ont. Reg. 439/89).
The entire project was in conformance with the Ministry of Educations Capital Grant Program.
Principal Design Concerns: The project was developed on a pie-shaped property of approximately 22,830 sq.m. It involved restricted street access and was adjacent to a municipal park. A further challenge in the design process was a design working-drawing time schedule of only 16 weeks. The very restricted schedule was generated by the Board request to have a construction start date of mid October 1992 and a completion date of August 1993. The school is intended to be ready for the 1992/1993 school year.
The design of the building was strongly influenced by site conditions. The choice of materials and construction methods (brick and wood trusses) were influenced by the need to maintain a rapid construction schedule during the winter months.
Of particular interest are exposed heavy timber roof trusses to be found in the gym and library. A cost efficient double loaded corridor system is punctuated by the creation of gathering areas, which are accented by floor patterns in the linoleum.
The entire facility has a sloping shingle roof with long extended eaves to allow the building to blend with its new residential neighbourhood.

Ecole St. Louis Elementary School - Penetanguishene - 1991
Owner: Simcoe County Roman Catholic Separate School Board
Contractor: M.G. Construction
Original Budget: $ 2.45 m
Tender: $ 2.33 m
Final Cost: $ 2.40 m
Authorized Extras: $ 71,808.
Area: 2,920 M2 - New 1,070 M2 - Major Renovation 31,431 sq. ft. 11,517 sq. ft
Project Profile: École St. Louis was an institutional addition to an existing eight class elementary school in Penetanguishene, Ontario.
The project entailed approximately 2,000 sq. m. of new construction as well as major renovation to 1,000 sq. m. of the existing school.
The new construction was divided into two segments: a new nine classroom wing and a gym with stage administration support facility wing.
The existing school was modified to accommodate a new library and resource centre, as well as new staff rooms and classroom upgrades. A new centralized heating system was introduced to service both new and existing space.
Principal Design Concerns: Care was taken to achieve an innovative total building design which allowed the existing school to harmonize with the new wings. The site, within the Town of Penetanguishene, was completely surrounded by trees and was adjacent to a municipal park and ball diamond. The elevation of the building was planned to reflect the rural and recreational nature of the surrounding property. Also, the Board was concerned that the school not look like an institutional block. We feel we were successful in creating a facility which is inviting to children and to the community.
Of special interest was the joint Board and Municipality ownership of the lands, parking facility, ball diamond and play areas. Accordingly, the new school was designed to facilitate their use during non-school hours and during summer months.
Further influences on the design were technical and safety concerns for maintaining the ongoing school activities during the ten month construction period. These in turn impacted on the choice of materials and the construction process.
