Proper nutrition is a key component of maintaining a healthy body and immune system. A raw diet is unsurpassed in providing the best nutrition.
A raw meat diet is particularly important to the immune system of a growing pup during the weaning process.
If a pup is weaned onto kibble food the immune system suffers from a decrease in nutrients and can be significantly lowered from a lack of Vitamin E and selenium.
Selenium is a trace mineral present in the canine’s natural diet in amino acids found mostly in organ meats. (Derived from the soil which plant matter grows in.) It works with Vitamin E as an antioxidant and immunostimulator. Because of it’s strong ability to stimulate the immune system, it is the most effective defense against viral infections such as Parvo.
NOTE ** Most dry and canned dog foods use an inorganic type of selenium - sodium selenite or sodium selenate. These forms of selenium are considered toxic by the National Toxicology Program of the US Department of Health and Human Services.**
As the pup grows, a deficiency of Selenium & Vitamin E can also cause muscular weakness. The failure of the muscle to develop and reach functional maturity at the same rate as the skeleton results in joint instability which may result in hip dysplasia.
Another contributing factor to HD are protien levels that are just too high. Many puppy foods contain protein near the 30% mark. This is too much protein for a pup, they can grow much too fast!
The protein level of canine milk is 8.5% - 9.5% (Compared to human breast milk of 5.5%) In a natural environment a pup will be nursed exclusively for 3 1/2 - 4 weeks and then be fed a combination of a raw meat diet and nursed for another 4 weeks, until being weaned and eating a raw diet only. A nutritional combination of - 9% protein for 4 weeks. 9% - 20% protein from 4 - 8 weeks. 16% - 20% protein for life. If a pup is weaned at 4 - 5 weeks old and fed puppy food for 6 months to a year this combination is unnaturally high in protein and can effect bones and growth.
A SARF diet rich in all the nutrients that nature has provided is the best defense against immune function problems and HD.
The Food Your Pup Will Be Weaned Onto The pups eat 3 times a day - one meal is a whole meal as shown below. The other meals are mixed whole meat and/or bone.
We do not start feeding pups until at least 4 weeks and better closer to 4 1/2 weeks if the dam has sufficient milk. Feeding too early contributes to allergies and intestinal problems later in life. The dam and pups will usually let me know when they are ready for real food!
