The structure of the canine spine consists of the following vertebrae - 7 cervical (neck) 13 thoracic (upper and mid back) 7 lumbar (loin) 3 fused sacral **6 to 23 coccygeal (tail)**
A bobtail Catahoula with a shorter type (stubby) tail has 6 coccygeal vertebrae. Only the #6 vertebrae is visible and can be felt coming from the body. Dogs with an approx. 2” bobtail have 7 coccygeal vertebrae and so forth.
There has never been an instance of a bobtail Catahoula being born without the required minimum of 6 coccygeal vertebrae - a full spine.
