Excerpt from article by John Leeper entitled "Going to extremes in Logs" in Log Homes Illustrated
Aug/Sept 93, pp.26-32
"There is a natural desire in American home buyers to create something exclusively their own -
something one-of-a-kind that will testify to their individuality and uniqueness."
"Of course, that creative urge isn't exclusive to buyers. Often, it is shared by craftsmen who long for
an opportunity to push their skills and materials beyond conventional limits and create a structure that
even an untrained eye would classify as extraordinary. But it is a rare occasion when a home buyer
and builder who share such uncommon visions get together. The product of one of these special
"meetings of creative minds" can be found in Anderson, South Carolina. It is a log home whose design
and character clearly reach the boundaries of the craft."
"It would have four levels and be constructed of timbers so large that the upper floor could be
supported by the collar ties in the roof system."
"That required a builder with a deep love for his craft and a specialized knowledge of how to design
and shape the largest log members. He found handcrafter Timothy Bullock of Creemore, Ontario."
"I saw Tim for the first time in a magazine advertisement," Terry recalls. "He was leaning on some
enormous pine timbers at the corner of a house he'd built. I knew that was what I wanted."
"I wanted a log home that would press the limits of log building."
"According to Tim, the pine, hemlock, and fir timbers employed in the project range in butt diameters
from 20" to 28". "The timbers were so large that on one tractor trailer that went to South Carolina, we
could only fit six logs. The house was significant for us as builders and designers. After it was
finished, we felt undaunted in just about any other project. It also helped us decide that what we
wanted to do was build premium homes for people who truly appreciated the craft of log building."
